What it is
How professional whitening works, and why supervision matters
Whitening gel contains carbamide or hydrogen peroxide, which passes into the enamel and breaks down the pigments that have built up from tea, coffee, red wine, curry and smoking, and from age. Peroxide gels have been used safely in dentistry since the 1980s; whitening does not harm the tooth surface when it is used correctly.
The trays are what make the difference. Yours are made from a digital scan of your teeth, so the gel sits exactly where it should, at the right concentration, without leaking onto the gums. Over the counter products are limited by law to a fraction of the peroxide a dentist can prescribe, which is why they rarely work.
Whitening lightens natural tooth structure only. Fillings, crowns, veneers and implants do not change colour, which is one reason we whiten before any cosmetic work rather than after. Your mouth must also be healthy first: any decay or gum disease is treated before whitening begins.

Teeth whitening: your questions answered
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, when it is prescribed and supervised by a dentist after an examination. Peroxide gels have been used safely for decades and do not damage the tooth surface. Sensitivity, if it occurs, is temporary and managed with desensitising gel.
How long does it take to see results?
Teeth usually begin to whiten within the first week and most people see a noticeable difference by two weeks. Deeper discolouration, for example from tetracycline, may take six to eight weeks.
How long does whitening last?
For most people one to three years, depending on diet, smoking and oral hygiene. Top up gel every three to six months keeps the shade, and your trays can be reused.
Will my fillings and crowns whiten too?
No. Whitening changes natural tooth only. Any fillings, crowns, veneers or implants keep their colour, so we plan whitening before any new cosmetic work so it can be matched to the brighter shade.
Why not use a whitening kit from the internet?
Products sold directly to consumers are limited by law to a very low peroxide level, which is why they rarely make a difference, and one size trays let gel leak onto the gums. Dentist prescribed whitening is stronger, safer and fitted to you.
Is the whitening gel in the New Patient Offer free?
Yes. Patients who register before we open receive professional whitening gel, worth £250, once their assessment confirms it is suitable. It is supplied to adults after examination, as the regulations require.
