What it is
What porcelain veneers are, and when they are the right choice
A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of ceramic, similar in thickness to a contact lens, made by a dental ceramist to fit the front surface of your tooth. Once bonded it becomes part of the tooth, changing its shape, size, colour or position in one piece. Porcelain reflects light like enamel, does not stain, and holds its polish for years.
Veneers are recommended where the change is too large for composite to do well: deep discolouration that whitening cannot lift, teeth that are small or worn and need rebuilding, significant differences in shape, or old bonding that has become tired. Where the change is small, composite bonding is usually the better and more conservative answer, and we will say so.
Preparation ranges from none at all to minimal smoothing of the outer enamel. It is not painful and in many cases needs no anaesthetic. Temporaries shaped like your final smile are worn while the ceramist makes the veneers, so you preview the result in everyday life before it is finalised.

How it works at LUSSO, step by step

Assessment and design
Full examination, photographs, a 3D scan and Digital Smile Design. Whitening is usually completed first.

Trial smile
A temporary mock up of the proposed smile is placed on your teeth so you can see and approve the shape and length before anything is prepared.

Preparation
Minimal, and often none. Impressions are taken digitally and temporaries shaped like the final design are fitted.
- 04
Laboratory
The ceramist hand makes your veneers to Dr Kal's design and shade record, usually within two weeks.
- 05
Fit
Each veneer is tried in, checked for shade and fit, then bonded. The bite is checked and the veneers polished.
- 06
Review and care
A review visit, a night guard if needed, and regular hygiene visits to keep the margins clean.

Porcelain veneers: your questions answered
Does veneer preparation hurt?
No. In many cases there is little or no preparation, and where the enamel is smoothed it is limited to the outer layer, so anaesthetic is often unnecessary. For more complex cases we offer it to prevent sensitivity.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last ten to twenty years, and some last longer. They need the same daily care as natural teeth, regular hygiene visits, and a night guard if you grind.
Are veneers permanent?
Where enamel has been removed, the tooth will always need a veneer or similar covering, so the decision is a long term one. That is why we preview the smile first and use no preparation techniques wherever possible.
Should I whiten my teeth before veneers?
Most patients do. Whitening lifts the natural shade, so the veneer can be thinner and matched to brighter teeth, which looks more natural. Whitening is completed before the final shade is chosen.
Can veneers stain?
The porcelain itself does not change colour. Staining can build up at the margins where the veneer meets the tooth if plaque is left, which hygiene visits and good home care prevent.
Are veneers harmful to my teeth?
No. Modern veneers are bonded to enamel and need far less tooth removal than crowns. Keeping the preparation minimal and the gums healthy is what protects the tooth underneath.
How many teeth should I have veneered?
Most people who want a broad, even smile choose six to ten upper teeth. Sometimes two or four are enough to correct a specific problem. The trial smile shows you the difference before you decide.
