What it is
Crowns, bridges and the choices between them
A crown fits over a tooth like a thimble over a thumb, covering it completely. It is used when a tooth is heavily filled, cracked, worn or weakened by root canal treatment, restoring its size, shape and strength while improving its colour and position. The tooth is shaped to make room, a digital impression is taken, a temporary crown is fitted, and the final ceramic crown is made by our laboratory and bonded at the next visit.
A bridge closes a gap by attaching a false tooth to one or more neighbouring teeth. A resin bonded bridge is glued to the back of a neighbouring tooth with minimal preparation, which makes it the most conservative option and a good choice for front teeth. A conventional bridge uses crowns on the teeth either side, which is stronger but requires more preparation. For a gap where the neighbouring teeth are healthy, a single tooth implant is usually the better long term answer because it leaves them untouched.
Our crowns and bridges are made by our own laboratory technician, which means shade and shape are checked with the person who makes them and adjustments are faster.

Examination and x rays to check the tooth can support a crown, or the neighbours can support a bridge. Alternatives, including implants, are discussed.

Preparation
The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic to remove decay and make room, a digital impression is taken, and a temporary is fitted.

Laboratory
Our technician makes the crown or bridge to the shade and shape record, usually within two weeks.

Fit
The temporary is removed, the crown or bridge is tried in, checked in the bite and against your natural teeth, then bonded.

Care
Cleaning at the margins, and under a bridge with floss threaders or interdental brushes, plus regular hygiene visits.

Crowns and bridges: your questions answered
Bridge or implant?
An implant replaces the tooth on its own root and leaves the neighbours untouched, which is why it is usually recommended where they are healthy. A bridge is quicker, avoids surgery and can be the better choice when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns. We show you both.
How long do crowns last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical and many last longer. The crown itself does not decay, but the tooth underneath can, so cleaning at the margin and hygiene visits matter.
Will the crown match my other teeth?
Yes. The shade is recorded digitally and checked in natural light, and because our technician is part of the team the crown can be adjusted before it is finalised.
Does it hurt to have a crown?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so the preparation is comfortable. Some sensitivity for a few days after fitting is normal and settles.
What is a resin bonded bridge?
A false tooth with a thin wing that is glued to the back of a neighbouring tooth, with little or no preparation. It is minimally invasive, non destructive and particularly good for replacing a front tooth.
