What it is
What a hygiene visit does, and why gum therapy matters
Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day. Where it is left, it hardens into tartar and the gums respond by becoming inflamed: they bleed when you brush, they can smell, and over time they pull away from the teeth and the bone beneath is lost. That process, gum disease, is the most common reason adults lose teeth, and it is largely silent until it is advanced.
A hygiene visit removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, lifts staining with fine powder and water, polishes the teeth, and records the health of your gums so change can be tracked. Where gum disease is established, gum therapy goes deeper, cleaning the root surfaces under local anaesthetic and reviewing healing over the following months.
Our hygiene team also protects the work you have invested in. Composite bonding, veneers, aligners and implants all last longer when the gums around them are healthy, and an annual polish keeps bonding looking new.

Hygiene and gum therapy: your questions answered
How often should I see the hygienist?
For most people every three to six months. If you have gum disease, are a smoker, or have implants, more frequent visits protect you. We agree the interval with you and remind you when it is due.
Does a hygiene visit hurt?
It should not. Modern ultrasonic instruments and Airflow are gentle, and numbing gel or local anaesthetic is used for sensitive areas or deeper gum therapy.
My gums bleed when I brush. Is that normal?
No. Bleeding is the first sign of gum inflammation. It is very common and it is reversible at the early stage with professional cleaning and better home care, which is exactly what a hygiene visit provides.
What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?
A method of cleaning that first makes plaque visible with a disclosing dye, then removes it and staining with a fine powder and warm water spray, known as Airflow, before any remaining tartar is treated. It is thorough, comfortable and kind to enamel.
