What it is
What a smile makeover involves
A smile makeover looks at the whole smile rather than one tooth: the shade, the shape and length of the front teeth, the symmetry between left and right, how much tooth shows when you talk and laugh, and how the smile sits within your face. The plan then chooses the tools. For many people that is whitening plus composite veneers on eight to ten upper teeth. For others it is aligners first, then bonding. For larger changes, porcelain veneers made by a ceramist.
Composite makeovers can be completed in a single appointment. The composite is sculpted directly onto the teeth, layer by layer, with no drilling and usually no injection, so you walk in with one smile and out with another the same day. Porcelain takes two to three visits because the veneers are hand made in the laboratory, with temporaries in between.
Whichever route you take, the result is previewed first. You see the design on screen and, for bonding and veneers, as a temporary trial smile placed on your teeth, so the decision is made with your eyes rather than your imagination.

Design
Photographs, a 3D scan and a Dental Wellness Assessment. Dr Kal designs your new smile digitally and shows you the preview.

Trial smile
For bonding and veneers, a temporary version is placed on your teeth so you can see the shape and length in the mirror and in photographs. Adjustments are made here, not later.
- 03
Preparation
Whitening, and aligners where they are part of the plan, so the makeover is built on a bright, well positioned foundation.
- 04
The makeover
Composite is sculpted in a single visit. Porcelain veneers are prepared, temporaries fitted and the final veneers bonded at the next visit.

Review
A complimentary review after two to four weeks, once you have lived with the smile, for any fine adjustment.

Maintenance
Hygiene visits, a night guard if you grind, and an annual polish keep composite looking new.

Smile makeover: your questions answered
How many teeth should a smile makeover include?
Say the letter E in the mirror and count the teeth you can see. Most people show eight to ten upper teeth, so that is the usual number for an even, symmetrical result. Some smiles need six, wider smiles need more.
Can it really be done in one day?
A composite makeover can. The design and trial smile happen at earlier visits, then the composite is placed in one longer appointment. Porcelain veneers need a laboratory, so they take two to three visits.
What if I do not like it?
You will have seen and approved the design and the trial smile before treatment, and Dr Kal shows you the result in the mirror before you leave so adjustments can be made with you watching. A complimentary review follows once you have lived with it. Composite is additive, so it can be adjusted or even removed.
Composite or porcelain?
Composite is less invasive, quicker and lower cost, and is ideal for small to medium changes; it needs refreshing every few years. Porcelain is stronger, more stain resistant and lasts longer, and is the better choice for larger changes in shape or colour. Many makeovers use both.
How long will it last?
Composite typically looks its best for three to five years with an annual polish and can be repaired easily. Porcelain veneers commonly last ten to twenty years with good care. Neither is permanent in the sense of never needing attention.
Will I need whitening first?
Usually, yes. Whitening lifts the natural shade so the bonding or veneers can be matched to brighter teeth, which gives a more natural result and a thinner veneer.
