How it works
Infiltration, not drilling
ICON works by opening the surface of the white or dark spot with a gentle gel, then drawing a clear resin into the lesion. Once set, the spot takes on the colour of the surrounding enamel.
The whole thing takes one visit, needs no injection and removes no healthy tooth.
What it is
What causes white spots, and how ICON removes them
White marks on teeth are usually caused by fluorosis, by a knock to the developing adult tooth in childhood, by early decay, or by plaque left around braces. The enamel in the mark is more porous than the enamel around it, so it scatters light differently and looks chalky white.
ICON works by drying the tooth, opening the pores of the white spot with a gentle gel, and then drawing a very fluid resin into them. The resin has the same optical properties as healthy enamel, so once it sets the light passes through the spot the same way as the rest of the tooth and the mark blends away. The whole process takes one appointment and, in mild and moderate cases, no tooth structure is removed.
For deeper marks, ICON is combined with whitening, so the surrounding enamel brightens to meet the treated area, or with a small amount of composite bonding where the surface is pitted.

Assessment
Dr Kal examines the marks, photographs them and grades them as mild, moderate or severe, which decides whether ICON alone, or ICON with whitening or bonding, is the answer.

Preparation
The tooth is cleaned and isolated. A conditioning gel opens the pores of the white spot.
- 03
Infiltration
The ICON resin is applied and drawn into the lesion, then set with a blue light. The change is visible as it happens.
- 04
Finish
The surface is polished. Any planned bonding is completed in the same visit.

Is ICON safe?
Yes. ICON is a minimally invasive method of improving white spot lesions. In the majority of cases no tooth structure is removed and the enamel is preserved.
Does it hurt?
No. In most cases nothing is removed, so there is no pain and no need for anaesthetic.
Is there any drilling?
In mild and moderate cases, no. In severe cases with deeper lesions the outer layer of enamel may need refining before infiltration.
How long do the results last?
Research on people who have had ICON suggests good long term outcomes for up to four years, and the treatment can be repeated.
Will it work on my marks?
ICON is designed for white, chalky lesions in enamel. Brown stains, marks within fillings and deeply pitted surfaces need different treatment, which we will explain at your assessment.
