What an implant actually is
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jaw where a tooth root used to be. Bone bonds to it over a few months, and a ceramic crown is then fixed on top. From the outside it looks and works like a natural tooth.
Because it stands on its own root, the teeth either side are left untouched, and the bone underneath is kept in use rather than shrinking away.

What a dental implant is, and why it is the closest thing to a natural tooth
A dental implant has three parts: the implant itself, a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where it fuses with the bone over a few months; the abutment, a connector that sits on the implant; and the crown, the visible ceramic tooth on top. Together they replace the whole tooth, root included, which is what makes an implant different from a denture or a bridge.
Because the implant is anchored in bone, it restores full chewing strength and clear speech, and it does not rely on the teeth either side for support. It also preserves the bone in that part of the jaw, which otherwise shrinks after a tooth is lost, so your facial structure is protected over time.
Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or every tooth in an arch using a fixed bridge on four to six implants, known as All on 4. Dr Kal has placed and restored implants for more than a decade, tutors on the University of Brighton and Sussex Medical School implantology diploma, and plans every case digitally before treatment begins.

How it works at LUSSO, step by step

Assessment and 3D scan
A full examination, a CBCT three dimensional scan of your jaw and a digital scan of your teeth. We check bone volume, nerves and sinuses, and your gum health, and agree a written plan with every fee listed.

Digital planning
The implant position, angle and depth are planned on screen against the crown you will end up with. A surgical guide can be 3D printed from this plan so placement matches it exactly.
- 03
Placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, with sedation if you prefer. Most single implants take under an hour and most people are back to normal the next day. A temporary tooth can be provided where the space shows.
- 04
Healing
Over roughly three months the implant fuses with the bone. We review you during this time and keep the temporary comfortable.
- 05
Your new tooth
A digital impression is taken and your ceramic crown is made by our laboratory to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth, then fitted and checked in the bite.
- 06
Aftercare
A hygiene visit within a few months, then regular reviews. Implants last longest when the gum around them stays healthy, so hygiene is part of the plan, not an extra.

How much do dental implants cost in Surrey?
At LUSSO Dental a single implant is £2,000 to place and £3,500 complete, which includes the abutment and the ceramic crown. Full arch fixed teeth are from £14,500 per arch. Your written plan lists every item, so the figure you agree to is the figure you pay.
Does having a dental implant hurt?
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic and is generally pain free. You may feel pressure but not pain. Afterwards, most people describe mild soreness for a day or two, managed with ordinary painkillers. If the idea of the appointment worries you, sedation is available.
How long do dental implants last?
Implants are designed to last for decades. The crown on top may need replacing in time, like any dental restoration, and the implant itself lasts longest when the gum around it is kept healthy with daily cleaning and regular hygiene visits.
How long does the whole process take?
Usually three to six months from placement to the final crown, because the implant needs time to fuse with the bone. Where bone quality is good, a temporary tooth can often be fitted on the day so you are never left with a gap.
Am I too old for implants?
No. There is no upper age limit. What matters is your general health and the health of your gums and bone, which we assess on a 3D scan at your first visit.
What if I do not have enough bone?
Bone can be rebuilt with a graft, and in the upper back jaw a sinus lift creates room for the implant. Both are routine and are planned on your CBCT scan. In many full arch cases, angled implants avoid the need for grafting altogether.
Can I have implants if I am a nervous patient?
Yes. Dr Kal is a qualified sedation dentist and holds a certificate in dental phobia. Intravenous sedation lets you have placement in a deeply relaxed state, often with little memory of the appointment.
