How it works

Composite is a tooth coloured resin that Dr Kal layers and shapes directly on the tooth, then hardens with a blue light in seconds. There is no drilling and usually no injection.
The final polish is what makes it disappear: the surface is finished until it catches the light the same way enamel does.

What composite bonding is, and what it can do
Composite is a tooth coloured resin that is applied to the tooth in soft layers, shaped by hand and then set hard with a blue light. Because it is added to the tooth rather than replacing part of it, no healthy enamel is removed, there is usually no drilling and no injection, and the whole treatment happens in one visit.
Bonding repairs chips and fractures, rebuilds edges worn by grinding or acid, closes small gaps, builds up small teeth, evens out length and symmetry, and brightens colour by layering over a darker tooth. Used on the edges only it is edge bonding; layered over the whole front surface it is a composite veneer.
Dr Kal's bonding is designed before it is placed. Photographs and a trial smile set the shape, then the composite is built up in layers of different translucency so the result has the depth and texture of a real tooth, then polished to a gloss. A complimentary review follows so that any fine adjustment is made once you have lived with the smile.

Assessment and design
A full examination, photographs and a 3D scan. Dr Kal designs the new shapes on your photographs and shows you the preview.

Trial smile
Composite is placed temporarily to preview the shape and length. You can take a photograph, show family, and reflect before the treatment visit.

Preparation
The tooth surface is cleaned, then a gel is used to roughen it microscopically so the composite bonds firmly. No drilling of healthy enamel.
- 04
Sculpting
The chosen shades are applied in layers with fine instruments and brushes, shaped to the design and set with a blue light, one tooth at a time.
- 05
Finish
Edges are refined, the bite is checked and the surface is polished to a natural gloss. You see the result in the mirror before you leave.

Review
A complimentary review after two to four weeks for fine adjustment, then an annual polish to keep the gloss.

Composite bonding: your questions answered
What is composite bonding?
A tooth coloured resin sculpted onto the natural tooth to improve its colour, shape and appearance. It is a single visit treatment that usually involves no drilling, no needles and no pain, and it does no harm to the tooth underneath.
Do I need braces or aligners first?
Slightly misaligned teeth can be disguised with bonding, subject to assessment. Where teeth are more crooked, straightening with clear aligners first gives a better, longer lasting result because the composite is thinner and the bite is kinder to it.
Composite bonding or porcelain veneers?
Bonding is lower cost, minimally invasive and ideal for small changes in shape, size and symmetry: chips, small gaps, uneven edges. Porcelain is recommended for larger defects, deep discolouration or tired old bonding, and lasts longer at a higher cost with extra visits. Having bonding first never rules out porcelain later.
How long does composite bonding last?
Good results can be expected for three to five years, depending on your bite, grinding habits, the quality of the tooth and your oral hygiene. An annual professional polish keeps it looking new, and small chips are repaired easily.
Do I need an injection?
In most cases, no. Occasionally an injection helps the long term outcome, and Dr Kal will discuss it with you first.
How long does the appointment take?
Typically one to two hours, longer when more teeth are treated. Appointments are booked for longer than needed so nothing is rushed.
Can composite stain?
Composite is more porous than enamel, so strongly coloured food and drink and smoking can stain it over time. A straw for coloured drinks, excellent home care with interdental brushes or a water flosser, and regular hygiene visits keep it bright.
What if I do not like the result?
You will have seen the trial smile before treatment and the result in the mirror before you leave, with adjustments made while you watch. A review follows once you have lived with it. Because composite is additive, it can be adjusted or removed and the tooth returned to how it was.
Can the bonding break?
Composite is not as strong as natural tooth, so it needs care: no biting nails, pens or ice. Minor chips are not unusual and are repaired quickly. The Lusso Elite membership plan includes a twelve month treatment guarantee.
