Sedation dentistry uses medication to relax you during treatment. At LUSSO Dental, Dr Kal provides inhalation sedation, breathed through a soft nose piece, and intravenous sedation, given through a small cannula, so nervous patients can have treatment calmly, often with little memory of the appointment.

What it is
How sedation works, and what it feels like
Dental sedation works by calming the parts of the brain that produce stress and anxiety signals. With those signals turned down, you are relaxed, the appointment feels shorter, and treatment that would have been impossible becomes manageable. With both forms of sedation you remain conscious and able to respond, but far less aware. Local anaesthetic is still used so there is no pain; pressure sensations are normal but do not hurt. Because you are not unconscious, sedation is safer than a general anaesthetic and recovery is faster.
Inhalation sedation is a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide breathed through a soft nose piece throughout treatment. It works within minutes, wears off within minutes, and you can drive afterwards. Intravenous sedation is given through a small cannula in the arm or hand; you feel it within a minute or two and most people drift into a light sleep, remembering little afterwards. You will need someone to take you home and stay with you.
Sedation also allows complex treatment, such as implant placement or a full arch of fixed teeth, to be completed in one long appointment rather than several short ones. Every sedation appointment is monitored throughout by a trained team, and Dr Kal is fully qualified in both techniques.

How does sedation work?
It calms the areas of the brain that release stress and anxiety signals. With those signals turned down, you are relaxed and cope far better with treatment, while remaining conscious and able to respond.
Will I feel or hear anything?
With both forms of sedation you are conscious but much less aware. Local anaesthetic stops any pain; you may feel pressure, which is normal and does not hurt. Most people under intravenous sedation remember very little afterwards.
What is the difference between inhalation and IV sedation?
Inhalation sedation is a gas breathed through a nose piece; it is light, works and wears off within minutes, and you can drive afterwards. Intravenous sedation is deeper, given through a small cannula; you will drift into a light sleep and need an escort home.
Is sedation safe?
Yes, when provided by a trained team with continuous monitoring, which is how every sedation appointment at LUSSO is run. Your medical history is reviewed first and some conditions may mean one type suits you better than the other.
Can I have all my treatment done under sedation?
Often, yes. Sedation allows several procedures to be combined into one longer visit, which is why it is used for implants and full arch cases as well as for anxiety.
Do you sedate children?
Dr Kal provides relaxation techniques and sedation for both nervous children and adults, subject to assessment and the appropriate guidelines.
I am embarrassed about my teeth. Will you judge me?
No. Many of our patients have avoided the dentist for years. Your first appointment can simply be a conversation, and treatment moves at your pace.
