What does a dental implant actually cost?

A dental implant is not one thing, it is three. There is the implant itself, a small titanium post placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over a few months. There is the abutment, the connector that sits on top of it. Then there is the crown, the visible ceramic tooth that does the chewing and the smiling. When a clinic quotes you a price, the first question to settle is how many of those three parts the number actually covers.

That second figure is the one most people want, because it is the cost of walking out with a tooth you can eat with. Why do implant prices vary so much between clinics?

Three things drive the difference. The first is what is bundled in. A headline figure that looks remarkably low usually buys the post in the bone and nothing else, so by the time the abutment and the crown have been added you are back at an ordinary number. The second is planning. A case worked up on a CBCT scan and a digital 3D scan, with the crown designed before anything is placed, takes longer and costs more, and it is the reason implants end up in the right position.

The third is the clinician and the time allowed. An implant placed by someone who has done thousands of them, with a trained nurse and a surgical guide made from the plan, is a different proposition from one squeezed into a short appointment. None of this means expensive is automatically better. It means the price on its own tells you very little, and the written plan behind the price tells you almost everything you need to know.

When do you need a bone graft or a sinus lift?

When a tooth is lost, the bone that used to hold it begins to shrink. If the tooth came out years ago, or came out because of an abscess or gum disease, there may not be enough bone left to hold an implant securely. A bone graft rebuilds that volume, and at LUSSO it starts at £600. It is routine, it is planned on your scan, and it is often carried out at the same appointment as the implant itself.

In the upper back jaw there is a further consideration, because the sinus sits directly above the roots of the molars. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus floor and places graft material underneath it to create the height an implant needs, from £1,200. Neither of these is a surprise charge. Both are visible on the CBCT scan taken at your assessment, which is exactly why we scan before quoting rather than afterwards.

What does replacing a whole arch of teeth cost?

Replacing every tooth in a jaw is a different calculation, because you are no longer paying per tooth. An implant retained denture uses two to four implants to anchor a removable denture firmly in place, from £6,500 per arch. It transforms how a denture feels, particularly on the lower jaw, where conventional dentures move the most. You still take it out to clean it, which suits a good number of people very well.

Fixed teeth on four implants, often called All on 4, start at £14,500 per arch. That buys a bridge of teeth that stays in, cleaned around rather than taken out at night. What should you ask any clinic before you agree?

Ask five questions and you will learn more than any price list can tell you. Does the quoted fee include the abutment and the crown, or only the placement? Has a CBCT scan been taken, and has somebody shown you your own bone on screen? Who places the implant and who restores it, and will you meet both people? What happens, and what does it cost, if the implant does not integrate? And what does the ongoing care look like afterwards?

That last question matters more than most people expect. Implants are lost far more often to gum problems around them than to anything that happens on the day of surgery. A clinic that talks to you about hygiene and gum therapy before it talks to you about titanium is a clinic thinking about year ten rather than week one. Is the cheapest implant ever the right implant?

I say this to every patient who asks me about treatment abroad, and I say it without judgement, because the sums involved are real. An implant is not a purchase, it is a relationship that lasts decades. Things occasionally need adjusting, a crown chips, a screw loosens. Being able to walk into the clinic that placed it, with your records and your scan already on file, is worth a great deal on the day you actually need it.

There is also the question of what a very low price has to leave out. Planning time, a surgical guide, a CBCT scan, a laboratory made crown and unhurried appointments all cost money to provide. When a quote sits dramatically below everything around it, one of those things has usually gone. Ask politely and directly which one, and any clinic worth trusting will tell you straight away without becoming defensive.
